What is an Affiliate Business? June 23, 2008

An affiliate is someone who simply promotes other people’s products. Meaning you don’t have to go through the headache of developing your own product, providing customer service, marketing, processing payments – nothing. You simply refer people to someone’s website and get paid every time they buy something. It’s a genius concept. You never have the hassle with processing the order, shipping the order, providing customer service – you do nothing more than get that person to that website!
When you started your venture, how did you estimate the demand for your product on the Internet? I did research on Overture to predict the volume of my Google paid click impressions. Using Excel was a key part of that process. Using tools like Inventory Overture (http://inventory.overture.com) you will be able to find out whether the product you have in mind is wanted. Type in your niche market term describing your product and you will see how many searches for this term and other related terms were done in the past month. The number of searches per month will depend on the niche market, but in general look for terms that are not higher than 20,000 a month.
For product sites, you could include independent product reviews, printer-friendly product specification pages, product comparison tables, customer feedback and recommendations and help pages that go exceed customer expectations. For service sites, these pages might detail your expertise, experience and qualifications, your proven track record, existing customer testimonials, common myths and misconceptions about the services you offer, or do-it-yourself tips for situations where a professional is not needed.
People are becoming more at ease with buying online but that does not mean you can take this for granted. Many of the concerns people have about shopping offline are magnified a thousand times over when it comes to buying on the internet. Your internet marketing plan should include a good web site design built in such away so that people grow to trust you. Do this first and the revenue will follow.
If you’re worried that you cant succeed, or that people won’t like your work, have no fear because you’re not alone, and I believe that this is healthy to an extent. What you mustnt do is let your past experiences get you stuck in a rut, and get you all worked up about not being able to succeed in the future.
Everyone makes mistakes, and you can’t please everyone all the time even though it would be nice. So no matter what you do with online marketing, or any other business for that matter, don’t let past experiences stop you from moving forward. If someone doesn’t like your stuff, thats fine, as long as you’re comfortable with it, give them a refund, or just take it on the nose, say ok then and move on. Don’t let this type of thing hold you back. I solidly believe that this is one of the big reasons so many people out there can’t succeed, because although they may be working long hours and putting everything into their business, they’re avoiding the things that they really need to do because of past experiences.
